chocolate milk, the tetons and sunshine

our trip to jackson was a complete success. and yes i was singing johnny cash the whole time. the tetons were gorgeous. i kept telling dan to pull over; at every turn it was an amazing picture perfect view. he smiled and said, you're seeing the vision, mart. i love that mountain man. we started peace like a river on the way home. i already love it, two chapters in. i felt like my mom, reading aloud on the long car ride. when i was a kid, she always read chapter books to us once we were packed tight in our big suburban. i always dozed off after she'd read chapter one, but i loved it all the same. there is something about falling asleep to the sound of your mother's voice. on the other hand, my li'l boy loves to babble his benji speak whenever he hears me talk. we cruise along and he jabbers his heart out. and pulls at his socks. which we think, is basically the cutest thing ever.

homework: there's no place like home

gabi, my sis: I used to want my house to look like a model home--every room perfectly clean and coordinated. I was constantly stressed, trying to keep things "photo-shoot ready." Then I read a book that suggested each room only needs: a well-lit chair to sit and read, a large flat workspace for projects and eating, and a comfy spot to rest. I have really tried to incorporate this trio in all of our living spaces. I've realized that my favorite homes to visit are my favorites because they are lovely, but also comfortable, practical, kid-friendly and relaxed.

elise: A happy home is clean. Not so clean you feel like you can't eat gooey chocolate chip cookies on the white couch, but tidy enough that you can sit down and relax. our house is a home because, well, it's filled with all our stuff. :)

whitney, my bff: My husband and I, the m&m dish on our coffee table, the yoga mats tucked in the corner, the dirty laundry in the basket, the towels on the radiator, the drips from the facet, the red bowl on our kitchen table filled with banana's, the planted cilantro, the sunset through our kitchen window, the shoes right by the door, music playing, family and friends over for dinner, Jason and I laughing and bringing one memory at a time to make this babysized apartment truly a home. It is where we wake up each morning and can't wait to get back to at the end of the day.

brittany of tangled & true: What makes a home a happy home are the people in it, the friends that pass through the doors, the memories that are made there, the kids laughing, the lessons learned, the love that is shared. I love walking into a house that is filled with positive energy, the hostess is relaxed, the food is plentiful, the house is clean the sun is shining in the windows and I'm surrounded by people I love.

polly, my aunt: My house is not grand or anything..it is pretty simple, but I do like to welcome anyone who comes to my door with open arms and a big hug. I love visitors and long chats in the living room, in the garden when the sun is shining and many have found their way into our big beautiful master suite. I was sick for several years and so I had many friends who found their way to the comfy chairs in my bedroom. There is always room for friends and there's plenty of crushed ice and diet coke at my house, so come for a visit!

abby, my cousin: I often think of this, and I think overall the home is where you gather with loved ones. I wonder if I lost my house tomorrow although it would be devastating, it just 4 walls, and my home would move to the little 1 bedroom apartment I’d share with my husband and my baby. I think too often that we all get so involved in decorating and buying and trying to make our houses look a certain way, that it sometimes becomes materialist in a way. (Myself included.) I mean right now I have a list a mile long of things I’d like to improve and buy for my house, but when you sit back and think, it’s the little things that make a house a home. Its something I need to remind myself of all the time. It’s the feeling of a house that makes it a home, not the STUFF inside of it.

summer: my house is made a home by the care and keeping, the concern and consideration, and the time and effort that goes into it each day. the being with my husband, the making of lunches, the doing of dishes, the hugging when he gets home from work, the lighting of candles, the washing of pillowcases, the baking of bread, the crashing on the couch, the discussing of the future, the fixing of the water softener, the getting of the mail, the turning on of lamps, the putting away of groceries, the kissing goodnight, and all the everyday sort of things.

ultimately, i believe that a happy home is the result of it having a happy maker. that means it all starts with me. my disposition determines the character of my home. the most important step i can make in creating a happy home is to be cheerful myself. to work with eager hands. to speak wholesome words. to have compassion. to practice hospitality. to be sweet and gracious. i've never been in a home where these qualities haven't lent a lovely and wonderfully inviting atmosphere. no matter how unattractive you find your house, you can determine the beauty of your home.

amy, my sis: Having a good time and knowing the mess is always worth it.

christie, my sis-in-law: I think what makes our house a home is the family that lives inside. We're by no means perfect, but we love each other and always try to show that. We like to have fun together. When anyone walks through the door at the end of a long day, here is a place they never question if they're loved and valued. Our home is our haven, and there's no place like home!

marty, my mom: A house is a structure. When there's a spirit of love inside, it becomes a home. Tulips on the table, somebody practicing the flute, cinnamon rolls in the oven, a quilt on a chair—the little touches are important because they entice family members to return at the end of a long day. But the details don't make the home. When there's contention, resentment, sullenness or fear, the furnishings won't make a difference.

Acceptance, understanding, commitment, laughter, hope, and love create an atmosphere of peace and stability. Under those conditions bread and milk and a dirt floor can sustain a family, and they will create the spirit of a magnificent home.

hilary: The last thing I think about when I think of a happy home, is a big comfy couch. Sure, it sounds silly. But who doesn't feel happy while lounging in a big comfy couch. It doesn't have to brand new with the latest fabric rage. It can even be an old corduroy couch that has been passed down for years, like our first set of couches were. They were my parent's couches when they were first married and had been sat on many times over, but I loved how big and comfy they were. They were welcoming, and when people came over to visit, they stayed because they were comfortable. Those couches also added character to our little apartment, and always provided a great story.

stephanie: Personal touches. The fact that I've decorated my home and not someone else makes it feel like home to me. Also, I've chosen easy-to-maintain fabrics like microfiber suede and leather to allow it to be both grown up and child-friendly at the same time. Not two weeks ago my 2-year-old took a pen to one of my living room chairs...in a big way! It was a breeze to clean up thanks to the stain-resistant fabric on the chair. I was so grateful to not have purchased something high-maintenance.

elizabeth, my sis-in-law: What makes my house a home is that it is lived in and enjoyed. My house is never spotless, there are always toys everywhere, and even more noise, but the kids are usually happy and I try to keep the front room tidy so when visitors come knocking I'm not embarrassed to invite them in for a chat.

cath: What we’ve discovered along the way--and our home is still constantly evolving--is that it’s important to choose a style that is inspiring to you, put some sweat into creating it for yourself if you can, save your money for special pieces that will last, and pepper it with meaningful items that make it uniquely you.

For home is where our stories unfold. It’s my hope that those stories, and the people who tell them, feel warm, comfortable, and loved.

thank you, panelists. i truly enjoyed reading your answers. what good homemakers you are; i've been so inspired these past few sundays. am happy i am not the only one scrubbing my sinks before guests come and now i have plenty of new recipes to try.

tune in next week for a brand new panel series for the month of june. the topic: Beauty Secrets. i hope you'll add your tricks and tips. can't wait.

a photo, thoughts and photoshop

a few weeks ago our trio drove to the moon and back. i learned something out there, in the middle of nowhere. if a living, breathing tiny bud of a small green plant can sprout and work it's way to grow in between the cracks of volcanic ragged rock, i too can make the most of any situation i find myself in.

be bold + bloom.

thanks for all the comment love this week about my photos and my family and my post-baby physique. you are some of the nicest people and really know how to make a girl feel good. we're headed to jackson hole tomorrow. just because when you live 2 hours away, it's hard to resist. we headed there last year after moving day. that trip turned out to be a swollen, rainy, pregnant, car sick, blustery day. we sat in the gorgeous teton national park visitor center and saw no grandiose teton through the mammoth windows, just rainclouds. a bit anticlimactic. i was sad not to see the view dan raves about. it was a bummer to say the least.

but we did see a bunch of buffalo, which was super cool. and i remember being so thrilled to waddle into a baby boutique to buy my fetus a li'l outfit. this very outfit happens to be the striped one benji is wearing in my memorial day slideshow. wow. major foreshadowing. can't get over how quick time goes. and i can't get over how life is full of foreshadowing. my family was teasing me last weekend because i kept bringing this up, but seriously people, it does. life seems to be full of hints.

am hoping for a sunny saturday to see the grand teton with my boys.
(this post turned out with a subtle plug, yay for national parks.)
have a super weekend, everyone.

text-on-photo inquiries are by far my most frequently asked questions, so i hope this helps. i design text on my photos (like seen above and elsewhere on m.writes) in a software program called adobe photoshop cs3. this is my favorite software program, with adobe indesign cs3 as a close second. i am only at the tip of the iceberg in photoshop knowledge, even after taking a college course in it. we worked straight out of this classroom in a book series. which i highly recommend. reading these chapters and doing the lame lessons is a great way to get to know the tools in your shop. whether it's worth the investment for you is definitely a personal decision. i would say if you're involved in graphics, website design, photography or multimedia work, it will rock your world. and it will love you right back. (that is, if you're going to use it, care for it, love it, take it on walks, and feed it.)

as another (and less expensive option); i've heard good things about photoshop elements 7. this would be perfect if you want a warmer upper to play around with. i'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. yay for text on photos, the perfect way to capture (and caption) the inner thoughts of the photographer.

p.s. thanks for the good advice everyone. picnik is an online edit-your-awesome-photos service. lots of tools, lots of fun. what a happy find. i found this post about picnik on creature comforts. wahoo.

weekend rhapsody IV

recap: monday afternoon

my in-laws hosted a fabulous patio party on monday for the fam. dan was in his element; outdoors with burgers on the grill and siblings left & right. it was a happy memorial day. dan's family kept saying, will this be on the blog? and i said of course! this party was very blogworthy. everyone deserves their spot in the sun, especially a few of my favorite faces.

after saturday night's rain, their garden was greener than ever. so refreshing; this backyard is nature at it's loveliest. (i absolutely love this picture of dan & shanna.)

i wouldn't put it past shanna to scoop sorbet into individual shells, she's very martha stewart like that... but when you can find these darlings at your local costco, why go to all that work?! look how divine these are. and so delicious too. seriously sweet with fun flavors. mmmm. mmm. am dreaming of them still.

cute mary and olivia. benji boy was happy to stay up from his nap to hang with cousins. he had so many good arms to lounge in.

this is where the family slideshow ends. phew.
we'll now return to regular scheduled programming. hooray.
thanks for enjoying the weekend wrap-up with me.

weekend rhapsody III

recap: sunday evening

what do you get when you have eleven adults, eight girlies, one benji and a big backyard? a barbecue fit for twenty. this is just part of my family. i know, it's crazy good times. my sister's twins turned two this weekend; if that isn't cause for celebration, what is? somehow heidi manages to run her busy household, grow a garden, bake dozens of goodies, be so stylish and fit, and host parties every weekend with ease. everyone who knows her thinks she is magic. i don't know how you do it, heed, but thanks for an incredible family party. am happy the rain held off just in time to blow out the candles. benji loves his cute cousins. he managed to stay wide-eyed the entire evening.

this slideshow is going to be what i come back to next time i'm missing everyone.

weekend rhapsody II

recap: saturday afternoon

my cute cousins, abby and whit, wanted to set up a playdate, billing it as a sack lunch party on the grass. i was so excited for a laid back luncheon to hang with the ladies in my life. these girls really know how to throw a party, this was the best sack lunch i've ever had. (you girls went overboard with cuteness, as usual. this gorgeous garden is the same venue from last year's baby shower.)

it was complete with delicious lunches, including fig newtons (my fave) & chocolate covered grapes. we had a bit of a yoga lesson from whit (she is the best), watched little girls frolicking in the background, had little boys laughing in the foreground (benji was beyond thrilled to see another one of his kind). as whit would say, it was dreamy.

a picturesque sack luncheon. three generations of girls gabbing at once (my mom & her sister polly, my cousins whitney & abby, me and my sisters, four little girls and two baby boys). thank you, thank you. being together is the essence of being home. they are more than relatives to me, they are my best friends.

weekend rhapsody

recap: saturday morning, bright and early

we headed over to see my brother and his wife. my mom snapped this happy candid shot while she watched us chit chat before breakfast. i used to see pete every day at the office; i miss him and love getting the chance to catch up. he is a favorite. i haven't been home since his biking accident, so i was glad to see him doing well and in great spirits. although he is healing, he will continue to wear a brace while recovering; a tragic thing for someone who loves to live an active life outdoors in the sunshine. i am impressed with his attitude and optimism. he'll come out stronger than before. he is just that type of person. they both amaze me with their homegrown happiness. they are going to be such fabulous parents, come september.

we headed to the blue plate diner {2041 S 2100 E, Salt Lake City} to meet up with my sisters for brunch. benji joined the girls for breakfast while dan went on a 100 mile training ride with his brothers. my sister, gabi flew in from pennsylvania for a getaway and her first introduction to my firstborn. the two seemed quite taken with each other. is their anything better than getting together with the girls, splitting omelets and catching up? i think not. the only thing missing were two more sistas-in-law; we missed you candice & christie!

gabi, heidi, marty, anna, amy and me.
all smiles. i love it.

m. back

hello. hello. this memorial day weekend was practically perfect in every way. all thanks to the delightful family folk who made every day a party.

prepare yourselves for a serious outpouring of pictures. and i didn't even get a photo of everybody. mostly the iphoto upload is 90% of my child posing with another member of the family. this is what it comes down to when you become a parent. it's cliche. and i'm completely okay with it. i hope you had a nice weekend too. i have so much catching up to do; unpacking and uploading and breadbaking and bedmaking. lets get this weekend wrap up rolling.

this is a dorky self portrait. i can't help but be cheesy in front of a camera. it's a skill i am trying to undo. i never have any shots of myself at the end of our excursions, so i figured i may as well document the fact that i was really there. this is a very happy me at the anthropologie sale. i am trying on one of those cute floral hip headbands. it sadly did not end up in my shopping cart. what do we think? can i pull it off? frankly, when i shop for anything these days i think practical, pretty and price tag. and in the back of my mind is this question; could this retain it's shape if benji mauled it?

sweet baby sandals. i love that dan bought them for him without any sort of influence from me. it's moments like these when i am over the moon in love with my boys. our babe has obviously stolen dan's heart; the two went in to REI and made a purchase of baby tevas over camping gear, ski gear and/or bike gear. hooray for flipflops. benj, you are officially a part of the family. he wore them all of ten seconds. but still.

my mom and i are night owls. my dad and benj are morning friends. therefore, i get the best of both worlds. we woke up to a bit of my dad's version of crunchy granola suite. mmm. mmm.

i was so glad to visit the cemetary with my mom by my side. i love that she said, i don't need to come here to remember them. i remember them every day of my life.

more photos coming. a lot more.
the winner of last week's giveaway is ALFIE.
woohoo. congrats and enjoy your postcards.

homework: home cookin'

gabi, my sis: I know conventional wisdom warns against untried recipes...but I like to experiment with something I've never made before. Having company motivates me to be more creative. (I serve with an old standby--like fresh bread and a foolproof salad--just in case!)

elise: the best meal for guests is paul's homemade pizza. any and all toppings.

whitney, my bff: Chicken Tacos. It's become a favorite meal in our home; quick, easy and very yummy: Cook chicken breast in crock pot by adding fresh salsa over the top. If you want to add some color & more flavor; add green peppers, chopped onion, taco seasoning & hot sauce. Cook all day (8 hours). Shred chicken. Once chicken is done, heat can of re-fried beans & corn tortilla's. Serve with homemade guacamole.

brittany of tangled & true: BBQ ribs and kebabs, grilled veggies, homemade rolls or bread, fruit and dessert.

polly, my aunt: Homemade chicken noodle soup with delicious rolls!!!

abby, my cousin: Chicken pesto pasta salad with fruit OR Orange mojo shrimp over Caesar salad with fruit. I like to do something light because usually someone has brought a great dessert we all want to eat!

summer: if i were having guests tonight, i would opt to make a meal that is fun and laid-back, possibly mom's stromboli or deep dish pizza. (avoiding uptight and elaborate, that's the idea.) i happened upon the perfect recipe for homemade pizza crust, and i love finding times to use it. plus, this kind of meal allows me to spend time with my guests during the prep; i love the feel of working side by side in the kitchen. and if you have picky eaters on your hands, this gives them a chance to make it just how they like it.

amy, my sis: We love to prepare meals on the barbeque. It's casual, easy and delicious!

christie, my sis-in-law: I am not so great at the meals; much better at desserts. I tend to want to serve something from the BBQ or a no-fail crock pot recipe. Meat and I don't always get along, so I need something that I know will turn out fabulous. Some successes I've had are the Cafe Rio pork in the crockpot, or Pioneer Woman's lasagna. My philosophy is, if the dessert is fabulous, they won't remember that the meat was overdone! I always go over the top on desserts.

stephanie: Since you never know when your guests will really arrive (delays always seem to happen these days in some form or another!), I think a great soup is perfect to have on hand for that first evening together. I like the Barefoot Contessa recipe for Lentil Sausage Soup is always a winner. I prefer to substitute locally made Italian Sausage for the Kielbasa and like to serve the soup with a good artisan bread and a light salad. Nothing beats a simple but delicious meal like this after a long day of travel.

elizabeth, my sis-in-law: My favorite meal to serve large groups of visitors when I would rather be playing with them than cooking for them is Kalua Pig with Panipopo. Delicious smoked pork (made the easy way in a crock pot with liquid smoke and sea salt instead of in a pit with banana leaves) and soft white rolls baked in a perfect combo of coconut milk and sugar, not too sweet that you can't eat it with the pig. Serve it all with some sticky rice and fresh fruit and you have a great meal. {side note: elizabeth is part mom / part gourmet cook. you'll have to check her blog for recipes, seriously delicious..}

thank you, panelists. tune in next sunday for their last tidbits about making a house a home. what is your favorite meal to serve guests?

ahem.. is this thing on?
one more tiny thing to mention before i go frolicking.

two of my close-to-sold-out mini diaries are up for grabs over at the bright side project. i adore this cheerful + fantastic website. (i landed upon it via miss b's other blahg. which is excellent too). am loving the li'l write-up she did. hip hooray for a mini diary giveaway. comment on her post to enter to win a mini of your own.

have a sunny (and bright) weekend.

22 May 2009

sunshine + sunscreen

hello + goodbye.
am wrapping up the week with random bits.

01. we're headed on a memorial day roadtrip. am hoping for super good weather, lots of fun and no teething episodes. we'll be enjoying all the comforts of home away from home; brothers and sisters, picnics and parks, saturday brunch, bike rides, sack lunches, cousins and a darling, doublicious two-year twin birthday party at my sister's house. (i have the candy necklaces packed.) i love attempting to squeeze a million things into one weekend.

02. i baked bread again the other day and thought i ought to share my latest tips (i have been getting emails about bread, gluten, yeast and dough advice, which i love and desperately knead). here we go with the unsolicited; work your dough til it bounces back. i use a kitchen-aid and mix the ingredients with a paddle and switch it to the dough hook when it starts pulling away from the sides. i let it knead on medium high for 8 minutes or more. then i work it with my hands if it needs it. i read that adding the salt near the end but still before kneading, is good too (haven't noticed much difference). also i like rising the dough twice. once in a lightly oiled bowl and then in bread pans; 1 to 2 hours each. though my favorite tip for you is to substitute warm milk instead of warm water for a velvety texture. for instance, my recipe calls for 2 1/2 cups of warm water, i walk on the wild side and use 1 1/2 cups milk + 1 cup water instead. be sure to proof your yeast in water. believe me, adding milk has changed our bread for the better. just like that song from wicked. i'll never go back. am very happy with the outcome. bread baking is experimental, every time is different, every time i learn something new. so i am keeping a big post-it note in my cookbook to jot down new bread tips each time i attempt a new batch. oh and i hope you are brushing butter on the top of your bread after baking. it makes a shiny soft crust. mmm. have wrapped up a loaf for my mom and dad with high hopes they'll love it.

03. benji turns 9 months old on monday. oh boy, i have so much to say about him. i keep jotting wildly on loose note cards about the cute things i shan't forget. (must collect my thoughts and bind them or scrapbook them or journal them or type them up. any ideas for documenting your child? i feel like i'm doing random pieces; i need a better system.) he is nine months in, nine months out. when he was roasting inside last year, i had no idea that my nine month old babe would be scooting his way across the floor, batting at the stereo and managing to turn on the jack johnson cd in the same routine, every afternoon. it's hilarious how his little chubby hand turns the fat volume knob. (these days i'm happy we kept all our old crap; like said stereo, because i don't mind if benji pounds on it or shakes the cassette tape doors off. i doubt i'll need them, i haven't made a mix tape in years.) more on benjibear later.

04. speaking of jotting things down, i promise to write in a notebook this weekend. i'll smush it in somehow, perhaps on the car ride. if you're involved in write club, i urge you to do the same. write some words. i read this fantastic writer's group advice from tiffany and felt happiness all over. and completely motivated again. thank you, tiff. (can i call you tiff? i probably would in real life, if you liked it or not. i tend to do that. but i think you would like it. and i'd let you call me mini mart.) so the basic gist of it is i must get back to the notebook. have been slacking, as i'm sure you can tell. am determined to be better. lets compare notes when i get back. we'll all be suntanned and gorgeous and inspired and ready to rock and ready to roll.

how could i resist a roadtrip with these boys? benji still loves the 3 hour drive; knock on wood. with a warm car, his mini lazy boy and plenty of chew toys, how could he not? three cheers for roadtrips, family barbecues, bubbles, kites, sidewalk chalk, sunscreen and sunshine. i am glad to be with my/his family on the weekend where we remember loved ones who are smiling down on us. will be thinking of them too.

i would love to know what you have planned for the long lovely weekend. hope it's a good one. will be back with more stories, more snapshots and surely more freckles.

i laughed out loud when i saw this mini version of me carrying my handy dandy clipboard, complete with my resolution list and my flipflops. this funny girl, katie, interviewed me for her blogger to blogger series. i first asked her questions and then she had awesome questions for me. i just went on and on. thanks, katie. it was so much fun (and i've never looked skinnier) thanks.

a game of tag

games are the best and dani just tagged me.
play along if you please.

8 things i look forward to:
lunchtime. memorial day weekend. summer camp outs. the day the local pool opens. buying our first house. planting a garden. someday hiking the grand teton with dan. watching benji grow (stand, walk, talk, play the pig in charlotte's web in his 1st grade program and so on).

8 things i did yesterday:

went on a stroll. saw four horses and three sheep. sat on the grass with no shoes and flipped thru the REI catalogue while benji tore up the junk mail. baked 2 loaves of bread. talked to my mom on the phone. folded laundry. read chicka chicka boom boom for the millionth time. tickled benji. sang songs while he took a bath. met up with friends for the first bbq of the season. benji wore plaid shorts. because for the first summer bbq (of your life), plaid shorts should be mandatory. there was one nine month pregnant mama (who is too hot and too pregnant to stay inside), two card tables set up in the shade with lots of delicious summery food, including sun chips, juicy watermelon and limeades. it was laid back and completely spur of the moment. which i loved. the package of oreos we brought was better than any fancy frosted confection i could've slaved over. sometimes less is more. benj stayed up way past bedtime and maintained 75% of his natural charm, thanks to the funny man who kept him happy with silly faces and monkey sounds.

8 things i wish i could do:
fly to the nss right now. sew. speak another language. give up french fries. do the scorpion and other impossible/impressive yoga poses. remember names. make baked alaska. get with the head honcho at the post office to discuss installing drive-thru windows.

8 shows i watch:
the sad thing is; i don't have tivo or even a good tv. which is probably for the best, i would be addicted to it. hollywood and all it's craziness is my guilty pleasure. unfortunately (or fortunately) we have only one tv station (abc) in our house, it comes in somewhere between fuzzy to really, ridiculously fuzzy. (still, ellen is hilarious even when i can't see her dance.) my tv dilemma is just another reason to get to the gym; glorious cable. i can get my fix of access hollywood or whatnottowear or idol or john+kate or re-runs on tbs while workin' up a sweat. the longer i watch, the more calories i burn. (talk about wanting my cupcake and eating it too.)

8 posts i've starred recently in google reader:
fabuless: flip flops for $1.
oh so beautiful paper: at nss
creature comforts: artiste
pioneer woman: beautiful bread
c+h: vintage glam wedding
sarah & abraham: canvas art
blah blah blahg: compose photos
twigs & honey: unique dresses

on the spot • no. 10

after collaborating with my new friend laura on custom wedding designs, i knew she should be the first bride i put on the spot. laura contacted me about designing her wedding invitations a few months ago. i was honored, knowing how many choices brides have these days! she was the ideal bride to work with; easy to please and so much fun! laura knew the look she was going for and had a strong sense of what her wedding would be like, yet remained open to new ideas. we came up with a design coordinating both elegance & simplicity (both traits, i now realize, laura possesses). after designing the printed material for the wedding weekend, i was confident their dream day would go perfectly; she planned an amazing event! here are all the details...

Bride: Laura Campbell
Wedding Date: April 18, 2009
Ceremony: San Diego California LDS Temple
Cocktail reception & Wedding dinner: Rancho Bernardo Inn, San Diego, California

Laura, you truly know how to throw a party! From your photographs, I can see your wedding was absolutely fabulous, what were some of your favorite moments of your special day?

Well, thank you. With most of our families and friends coming in from out of town, it turned more into a wedding weekend, rather than just one day. Cortney (the groom) got to spend the day before with family and friends playing golf, and I got to spend the day with some of family and friends at the RBI spa. We had great meals, great conversations, just a great time altogether. It was truly a celebration! Realizing all the time and effort that had gone into everyone being there for just the two of us was amazing, special and ever so humbling. We had a program during the dinner where members of our family and our best friends got up, took the mic, and gave touching toasts, sang funny songs, and gave us sweet words of advice. It really personalized the whole day for us, and we felt like everyone had a piece in making it special. I have never felt so much love in one place before.

How did you go about personalizing your event? (I love the idea of boxed up cupcake favors and polaroids too.)

The cupcakes were made by Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills. We wanted to include them because we felt like we bonded over our mutual love of sugar in the beginning of our relationship, and it is one of our favorite places in California.

I did not want to do a traditional guest book, and I liked the idea of guests getting involved with a Polaroid camera and being able to take fun pictures along with signing. That way, we could remember everyone, exactly as they were, and it made it extra special. It turned out even better than I thought, and we got some great pictures that I will keep forever.

When it came to personalizing our event, we wanted everything to feel like us. We wanted to keep a very natural, relaxed and organic feel to the whole event. We kept that in our theme and included our favorite food, favorite flowers, favorite music and colors, etc. Everything just felt like US.

You are a gorgeous bride, any beauty tips?

I'm definitely no expert when it comes to beauty, and I consider myself a minimalist. My sister, Amy, who is a very talented artist, did my makeup on my wedding day, so there was no confusion about what I liked, and she made me look much better than what I do on a day-to-day basis. I just wanted to make sure I looked like myself, so I kept things very simple and soft. I think less of everything is better.

I'm also very routine about the things I do. I am HUGE on exfoliating. I love Epson salt baths to detox, revive muscles and de-puff skin. I use an exfoliating mitt to stimulate the skin and leave it soft. After the bath, I always lather on Burts Bees Milk and Honey Lotion. I love all the Burts Bees products, and use the lotion, body wash, hand lotion and pomegranate lip balm. I'm a stickler about drinking water too. Your skin, hair and everything else looks best when you are well-hydrated.

Your wedding day earrings are such a fun choice; I love your style. May I ask where you got them?

my younger sister, Anna picked those little gems up for me at Banana Republic - they are fun, aren't they? I didn't wear any other jewelry (other than my wedding band/ring) so I wanted to make a statement, of sorts. they were also my something blue.

Any favorite event vendors?

My photographer, Rachel Thurston did an amazing job with my pictures and was a huge help to me on the wedding day. She was so great with all of our guests and really captured the spirit and happiness of the day.

Our florist, Sharon Mintz of Organic Elements, exceeded my expectations in every way. I went to her with a vision of what I wanted, and she went above and beyond.

Elaine Ardizzone of Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. in San Diego made the most delicious wedding cake I've ever tasted! Not to mention, it being completely beautiful and lovely.

Tricia Sadikoff, at Rancho Bernardo Inn also did a great job of making everything the day of move smoothly and created a dinner menu for us that I still have dreams about.

And of course, sweet Marta of Marta Designs, helped me tremendously when it came to personalizing my event. She created some beautiful pieces, from our shower and wedding invitations to our dinner programs, menus and place cards. She made everything so easy for me. Her creativity and advice was influential and much appreciated through the whole process.

Do you have any other words of wedding wisdom?

I think the wedding is all in the details. Making the guests feel special, including things that the two of you love - I think that is what makes the day special, and that is what you will remember. Also, do not let the wedding get bigger than the marriage - remember why you are planning this special day! Trust in the people you have hired to help, and enjoy yourself. Interact with your guests, enjoy the food, hug everyone and take a moment to look around to see all you have created. And have fun!

thank you, laura, for sharing the details of your unforgettable wedding day with us. you are a beautiful bride, with classic taste and excellent advice. best wishes in your matrimonial bliss. xo.

we have a winner

hello, my lucky charms. this one was super fun. how truly rad was all of your childhoods? very. i loved reading about your happy small worlds: the running free and the bike riding and the barbies and the roller skates and the sunshine and the otterpops and the mudpies and the cousins and the carefree long summer days of youth. (am delighted to report there was not a one that said their favorite thing about childhood was playing video games. yay! thank goodness.)

thank you for thinking up tiny soliloquies for me to read. i was tickled pink and impressed you were all up to the challenge. our random winner is lisa r. lewis. congrats! you've won your favorite art print from Den-10 Studio. please email me with your selection and shipping address.

tune in tomorrow, a darling bride spills her advice on making your wedding a personalized affair with flair. oooh, hers was just gorgeous. it's true, i'm a happily married woman in love with wedding details.

{i love weddings so much sometimes i wish birthdays were weddings. that should be the theme for my next birthday party; everyone arrive in a white frock with prom hair. we'll watch each other's wedding videos, devour bite size delectables and skim martha stewart wedding magazines. if i'm rich by then, i'll hire a dj for dancing on my kitchen linoleum. at the end of the evening, everyone goes home with a dainty bouquet. and a cute favor, of course. the valet will get your car. feel free to tip him, his name is dan.}

homework: housework

last week, majority ruled. the most common way these panelists prepare for visitors is to CLEAN! after the house gets down & dirty, these ladies know how to get it shipshape & shiny...

gabi, my sis: Murphy's Wood Soap has been my fave for years. These days I'm also really liking Multi-Surface Pledge.

elise: My favorite cleaner is Windex and Swiffer Dusters.

whitney, my bff: Pine Sol mixed with water gives your kitchen floor the cleaning it needs and the smell of freshness. Reminds me of my mom's house.

brittany of tangled & true: Shaklee, especially the scour off kind. It is a lifesaver.

polly, my aunt: Pine Sol
(this is true! every time i slept over at whitney's, her mom had the floors mopped with Pine-Sol on saturday morning! we couldn't step in the kitchen, so we'd run for a mcmuffin instead.)

abby, my cousin: WINDEX! It cleans everything from windows, to bathrooms, to stainless steel.

summer: Barkeeper's Friend. hands-down favorite. powerful on my stainless steel pots and pans. removes rust from my knives. and adding a little vinegar when you're scrubbing will get your hard-water stained sink to shine.

amy, my sis: Windex. I use it for everything.

christie, my sis-in-law: My absolute MUST HAVE cleaning product is the Magic Eraser. I have gotten permanent marker off my white Pottery Barn desk with that thing. It has saved many a wall from crayon marks and fingerprints. You do have to be careful, as it can take off paint, but I've yet to meet a surface that can't be saved using the Magic Eraser. I buy them in bulk!

hilary: Clorox Cleaning Wipes are a lifesaver for me. Sure they are pricey. But I'll tell you what... those things are great! There have been far too many times when someone calls to see if they can stop by in 15 minutes and I panic looking at my crusty counter and less-than sparkling clean bathroom. A few wipes from these bad boys is all you need and your home instantly looks and smells fresh and clean.

stephanie: Mrs. Meyers lavendar countertop spray.

thank you, tidy cleaning ladies. tune in next sunday for each of the panelists' favorite meal to whip up for family and friends.

what is your all-time favorite household cleaner?

free coldplay

seriously, i knew gwyneth did the right thing by marrying chris martin; a match made up of celebrity stardust. we went to a coldplay concert a few years back, when yellow was the new black. i definitely fell, like the rest of you, madly in love with their tunes. and their laidbackedness. how cool is coldplay? well, very. the band is offering a 'thank you to our fans' free download of their new album. that deserves a very big hip hip from m. in idaho. click here to download. mine is loading right now. mehopes it's not a scam and/or virus. if m.writes goes down tomorrow i guess that means i'm toast.

happy coldplaying.

only one year ago

i rarely peek into my archives. which is ironic for someone who calls this her dear diary. aren't diaries for revelations on return visits? i should glimpse backwards more often.

may 2008 seems like yesterday. i can picture it so clearly. i was packing up boxes, dan was taking his last finals and we were preparing for the unknown. moving, starting new job, having baby. flipping our life upside down; strapping in and bracing ourselves for big change. we were coming undone, stepping off a cliff, learning life lessons, celebrating my law school graduate and starting fresh in our new nest.

i remind you fellow friends, i looked like this and at ten o'clock every night, my belly was benji's personal bounce house. but he wasn't benji yet. he was still bruce (dan's idea of a pet name). i had no idea then how this would be. how we would transition from d & me to d, me & baby b. i didn't imagine us meeting new friends, discovering new places or photographing cows in our spare time. i didn't fathom how the big skies of idaho would change me or how dan would settle into real life as a lawyer. or how i'd settle into becoming a mama and how much i would love my baby boy. i had little idea of how so many changes could occur in one year and how crazy fast my babe would grow from a sleepy newborn to army crawling on the kitchen floor. (or how happy a set of jingling teaspoons makes him. and a small plastic funnel, you gotta be kidding me, best thing ever. brown paper sack, pure heaven. my sweetheart boy is so over conventional toys.)

this year, so much good has come. and to think, i was afraid of change. even fearful of the unknown. i didn't know becoming a trio would work out so smoothly. i didn't know that living in farm country could be so refreshing. or that cattle drives could be so thrilling. i didn't know that i could become a mom and still be me. last year, i had so many wonders and so many wishes. of course, i still do. yet once again i have learned that change can be good. very good, excellent even. and the unknown sometimes turns out for the best.

p.s. the only redeeming factor about scrubbing sinks, wiping behind the fridge, dumping drawer contents into boxes, packing up life's belongings and wrapping bubble wrap around the hundreds of dishes you tell your husband you need, is the bliss of sending out cute moving announcements when it's all said and done.
